One of the worst things that can happen is become irrelevant. Irrelevant, as in "doesn't matter".
Although not quite the same, something along the lines of Dr Raj's English song in Kannada:
"Love me or hate me, kiss me or kill me, O darling please do something to me...." :)
He didn't mind being hated, he would still be relevant!

Relevance is a relative term I feel.
For eg. it is relative to time and to people.
There is hardly anything that is irrelevant.. some old saying said.. Even a wild herb with all its wild surroundings is relevant and is worth in its own right.
